Alabama Cooperate Baptist Fellowship is inviting its member churches, BCOC included, to join with Sowing Seeds of Hope – a nationally renowned community development organization in Perry County, Alabama, and long-time partner of ALCBF – in addressing SSOH’s massive backlog of handicap access ramps for Perry County residents.
Perry County lies in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt and was a major epicenter of the Southern Freedom Movement, but acute underdevelopment linked to systemic racism and extractive capitalism continues to plague its economy and severely hamper the quality of life for the vast majority of its citizens.
BCOC and Southside Baptist Church are joining together to build two ramps this fall as part of ALCBF’s campaign. Southside’s Pastor, Tim Kelley, and BCOC’s Minister of Community Engagement, Eric Clark, will be joining together to head up this collaboration.
We are looking for volunteers with construction experience ranging from expert to novice. Even if expert volunteers are not able-bodied, we would still welcome their guidance and oversight. However, novice volunteers who wish to help with construction and installation must at a minimum be able-bodied. Volunteers who own trucks and/or trailers may contribute by transporting ramp parts and tools from Southside Baptist to Perry County. All participating churches will use a streamlined construction process developed by a team of engineers from Trinity Baptist Church in Madison, Alabama. BCOC and Southside will receive detailed construction designs for each ramp, construct and store the parts for the ramps on Southside’s campus in September, and transport and install the ramps onsite in Perry County in October.
Below are the specific dates and times for these phases. Volunteers do not have to be available for all these dates and are therefore free to commit to them as they have space in their schedules.
